My S.W.E.A.T. 1000 Journey. So far.
13 January 2014
My S.W.E.A.T. 1000 journey began over 18 months ago at their branch in Morningside, and I shudder at the thought of my first class as I remember gasping for oxygen that didn't seem to exist and realising my quads were going to scream at me for days afterwards.
I'm not afraid to admit that I didn't go back immediately. I was damn petrified! And, to be honest, not yet aware of how committed I had to be to my health to see results. I slowly crept back and fought the urge to give up.
If you've been living under a layer of fat for a while, S.W.E.A.T. 1000 stands for Specialised Weight Endurance Aerobic Training and you can lose up to 1,000 calories in just one hour. The classes comprise of interval training - a very intense combination of running and weights. Sounds basic, right? Well, the real difference here is that their treadmills are imported and can reach inclines of up to 30%! Are your calves burning, yet? Combine that with weights utilising steps, dumbbells, Bosu balls, resistance bands, and body resistance, followed by sprints to finish off the classes, and you have the ultimate workout. And a pool of sweat to swim in once you're done.
The instructors push you. Hard. But remain really supportive, and also ensure that you do all the exercises correctly to prevent any injury. This is something very different from other group classes I have attended. They're usually so packed that individual attention is impossible.
For the past six weeks, I have committed to S.W.E.A.T. 1000 like it were my life partner. I have been visiting three to four times a week inbetween my usual gym sessions, and yoga. This commitment made me realise that there is so much more to S1K than a physical challenge, the mental aspect of getting through these classes is an achievement in itself. Pushing through the pain and exhaustion takes a lot, but achieving it every time is an indescribable. That's where the addicition comes from.
Once you break through a certain barrier, it's fascinating to see how quickly your body adapts and how far you can push yourself. I am now doing my sprints at 20 km/hour for about 45 seconds. Getting there...
I feel like I am in the best shape of my life, and I can only smile when I look in the mirror. Not because my body is perfect, but because it is becoming stronger and fitter than ever before. That is sexy.
Another thing I was impressed with was when I went running recently for the first time in a few weeks. I felt stronger, and was able to run faster than before and wasn't as tired when it was over.
If you're serious about your fitness and health, book a class today. Your first one is on the house!
