Woman INpowered: A Lesson In Personal Safety
20 November 2012
We have reached a point where it’s not a matter of if we will be affected by crime, it’s a matter of when. Even if this means we are not directly involved. Nearly 16,000 people have been murdered in South Africa in 2012 (so far) and it is estimated that a woman born in S.A. has greater chance of being raped than learning how to read. It’s a sad truth, but one we need to address sooner or later.
What if you had a feeling that you were either going to be raped, murdered, or both? Let that simmer. What would you do? Would you scream? That wouldn’t help much if your predator had taken you to a field in the middle of nowhere. Would you kick and fight? Well, that wouldn’t help either, because all it would do is piss off your predator, and instigate a fate far worse than the original intention.
So what could you do? You could make a choice, that’s what. Right now, you can ensure that a mindset change takes place so that you can choose to live.
I have attended many self-defense classes in the past, in the hope of being covered by a blanket of safety through my attendance. However, each half-day workshop has left me feeling empowered for about an hour afterwards and then, well, confused. How often would I have to practise the moves that were taught? What if my attacker approaches me from an angle not taught during the workshop? Was that a kick or a punch that I should use in which situation again? Sound familiar?
I recently attended a course through Woman INpowered. You read that right. Woman INpowered (WIP) is a company that runs a series of 5-week courses to assist with a crucial mindset change – you have a choice.
The company came about after owner, Mark Grobelaar, spoke to Alison - a well-known rape victim and author of ‘I Have Life’ - about her hellish ordeal. If you’re not familiar with the story, two men raped Alison, stabbed her numerous times and then slit her throat, before leaving her for dead. Mark took this experience as well as his extensive karate knowledge and experience to develop the WIP course, and I can finally say that it is a “self-defense” course that is fool-proof.
After the 5 weeks, I felt, for the first time, that I would be able to defend myself and escape a potentially fatal situation. You can’t put a price on that…
To solidify this way of thinking, we ended the course by punching through wooden boards. It’s a pretty empowering feeling, and every time I look at those two pieces of wood in my home, I’m reminded that I don’t have to shit myself every time I walk on my own somewhere.
Please, ladies… Don’t miss out on this opportunity. Contact WIP when you have a sec, and benefit from having a choice.
